New Year, Same Me More or Less

Let’s start off by saying, Happy New Year!

I am not sure where that holiday break went. Where I was lucky enough to spend the break at the coast with my family, you may have seen that many Australian’s had the worst holiday that anyone could imagine. Huge bushfires have & still are burning from October onwards in my home country at the moment. If you would like to read about more way you can help - visit here.

As I crash back into a busy January work schedule I wanted to take a little moment to re-focus myself for the year ahead. I always love reading these types of posts so I thought I would share some of the things I want more & less of this year.

  1. Focus on the work.
By this I don’t mean prioritise work over everything else. I mean the work, the skill, focus on the work that I do and let that guide me. Social media will always be a part of my work but it has never been a goal of mine to be my work entirely. Sometimes I feel like I can get wrapped up in it too much that it takes my focus away from what is truly important to me & what brings me joy.

  2. Focus on design.
2019 was a huge photography and styling year from me. I spent the year really focusing on that skill and I took on a lot of projects for that. No regrets but I feel a strong urge to bring focus to my first love - design. This year I want to really give my attention back to design, learn more & grow. Branding in particular. It has always been my favourite area of design so I would love to work on a lot more

  3. More small trips.
After writing my 2019 wrap up I realised some of my favourite memories from the year were from little staycations within Australia. We still don’t know what the plan is for the year between buying a house or a larger overseas holiday but either way I really want to make small trips a priority. There are a few boutique hotels and Air BnB’s I have on my list so I think it is time to start booking those in.

  4. More spending on things that actually add value to my life.
Not spending more, but focusing that spending on things that I know bring me joy. Long lunches out with friends & family, lunches that I can eat while working that aren’t just crackers because I am too lazy/busy, plants & flowers, things for that home that I spend 98% of my time in, books & magazines, clothes that are made by brands that I love and feel connection to, art to fill my home, spicy margaritas.

  5. Less anxiety over things out of my control.

Last year it got a little out of hand. I admit I would go into a slight state of panic over things that definitely don’t warrant it, especially around work. Rainy weather which meant I couldn’t shoot, packages not arriving on time, slow communication that meant I couldn’t meet deadlines etc. Things that are completely out of my control but I took on as personal failures. I refuse to do that this year. I refuse to allow myself take on things out of my control as personal responsibilities.

  6. Less Disposable.

I really try to be conscious of my waste as a consumer but I would like to stay on track to make better decisions when it comes to it this year. If I am eating or drinking, avoiding doing it on the move so that I can sit and enjoy it in store to avoid takeaway packaging. I just ordered a small film camera so that I no longer use disposable cameras. I also need to order a reusable bubble tea cup because that is the one thing that I get and don’t have a sustainable option for.
If you know a good place to get one let me know!
